New York Fashion Week Trends 2013-2014

This year's New York Fashion Week showed a lot of wearable clothing, with some rather obvious exceptions. Jeremy Scott, Band of Outsiders, and Betsey Johnson were among those designers with some rather out-there creations.
Check out these wacky collections!

It's "back to black" this season with most designers featuring at least one black piece in their collection. The tone was matched to all colours in this year's show, but it was most commonly matched with its classical counterpart - white. New York had it all - black leather jackets, black sequinned dresses, big black coats ... from the likes of Ralph Lauren, Proenza Schouler, Elizabeth and James, Donna Karan and Vera Wang

Furr-ection

The fall collections welcome the winter and that means fur. This year, pelts peppered jackets or trimmed capelets or hemlines of dresses. As well as the neutral blacks, whites and browns, there were many instances of colour with green, blue and red dyed-fur.

Colour-centric

The dreary winter blues were chased away with bright colour-blocking hues of pink, orange, green and red. Betsey Johnson clearly was the winner of the most eccentric colour scheme, with bright mustard yellows and fuschias leading the pack.

Red Asian Persuasion

BOTTOM: Zac Posen, Marchesa, Marchesa
Shades of red were a dominant theme this season - particularly, the deep reds of traditional Chinese costumes. Red and gold featured heavily in Marchesa and Anna Sui's shows. Anna Sui's collection seem to hit all the right notes for me - it had a little of everything. The East certainly inspired the West this year, with column silhouettes and kimono style outfits from Zang Toi, Thom Browne and Reem Acra.

Leather Library

Fall fashion didn't stray from its basics as leather paraded the runways again this season. Leather was incoporated into tights, dresses and varsity-type jackets, as well as the classical bomber jacket. I particularly loved the collection from 3.1 Phillip Lim.

A Striped Affair

Little stripes, big stripes - colour-clashing stripes were striding down the runway, continuing on from the Spring-Summer 2013 season. Stripes on florals were the big hit from 3.1 Phillip Lim.

  1. The "colorific" trend is one of my favorites. I'm a sucker for anything bold and bright :)
